  • Role Purpose

    To ensure the British Council maintains its reputation as the highest quality provider of English Language through work as part of the academic management team to maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching center, through the management of in-house teacher development Programme, and ensure that British Council Tunisia is an example of UK ELT best practice.
  • Main opportunities and challenges for this role

    The Maghreb Teaching Centre Cluster (which consists of 4 centres across the 3 countries of the francophone Maghreb; Algeria Algiers, Morocco Casablanca & Rabat, Tunisia Tunis) are focused on regaining the Young Learners volumes lost as a result of the covid pandemic and growing our young leaner business through strategic partnerships with schools & other educational establishments.

  • The main challenges & opportunities for this role are:

    Supporting the growth of the Young Learner business in Tunisia and across the Francophone Maghreb through strong leadership of the Tunisia Teaching team
    Leading on the academic component of customer-focused projects as agreed with the Young Learner Academic Management Team & wider to deliver value of money for our customers.
    Work with & support the Adult Academic Management Team as and when needed to support the adult programme in Tunisia.
    Where appropriate, working across functions (Customer Service, Marketing, Operations, and Academic) across the Francophone Maghreb to put the customer at the heart of what we do.
  • Main Accountabilities


    Performance Management and development of teachers

    Performance management

    Provide effective line management support for staff managed as per current Teacher performance management guidelines, policies and procedures
    Ensure that all teaching is delivered to standards set out in teachers Role Profiles, the Statement of Approach and Teaching Skills framework documents

  • Learning and development

    Contribute to the design and implementation of an annual training schedule taking into account Teaching Centre needs
    Actively identify appropriate opportunities for staff learning and development.
    Ensure teachers are compliant with all mandatory online training (including Safeguarding, Data Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Special Educational Needs and Diversity and Health and Safety). Provide any mandatory F2F training necessary.
    Act as a role model for good classroom practice by encouraging teachers to observe you teaching, doing demonstration lessons and leading teacher development sessions.
    Delegate the development of appropriate training/teacher development sessions (according to life stage and centre needs) to Advance teachers
    Provide or set up mentoring programmes for new teachers/teachers teaching new life stages etc where appropriate.
    Agree own personal development plan and review with line manager
    Routinely monitor developments in ELT theory and practice and bring these to the attention of your teaching team through presentations, practical sessions, recommended reading etc.
    From time to time, represent the British Council at local ELT conferences
    Proactively look for opportunities to highlight examples of best practice within the centre and externally

  • Duty of care

    Proactively monitor the well-being of all your line manages and provide an appropriate level of personal support
    Ensure that all line managers of teachers are also doing this and that appropriate action is taken to deal with any issues


    Support product development, teaching delivery and quality in the classroom

    Contribute to the evaluation and improvement of products and related services to meet students? needs by actively working as a member of the teaching centre management team.
    Ensuring that research into courses and services is implemented and collated as required by the marketing team
    Organise the piloting of new courses and materials where relevant.
    Introduce new products to teaching staff and support to ensure that teachers deliver products to the product specification
    Monitor customer satisfaction and re-registration rates and determine appropriate action to address issues
    Ensure Teaching Quality standards for teaching and learning are consistently met
    Manage and develop learner assessment techniques and processes (continuous assessment, portfolio assessment, and test design), ensuring appropriate progression between levels.


    Marketing and communications

    Ensure communications to all life stage groups are accurate and effective
    Work with the Student Services and Customer Services teams to deal with academic enquiries or complaints ensuring teachers are fully briefed and consulted where appropriate
    Liaise with Exams team to ensure that opportunities for efficiencies and collaboration are exploited wherever possible.


    Teaching Centre Management duties

    Termly timetabling support, ensuring there is teaching cover available to meet student expectations and needs.
    Contribute to the implementation of and (ongoing support for) any new management procedures for teachers
    Assist in the recruitment of new teachers by participating in shortlisting and interviewing as required
    Assist in the development and delivery of induction programmes for new teachers


    About You (essential requirements for the role):

    Full Mastery of English across 4 skills, equivalent to CEFR C2 (IELTS Academic Paper Band 8/9 in each of the 4 sections).
    Undergraduate Degree
    TEFL-Q qualification (Diploma-level EFL/TESOL), or equivalent as recognised by the British Council.
    Graduate plus higher level teaching diploma DELTA/ Trinity Diploma in TESOL (or equivalent) or relevant NQF level 7 in appropriate area)
    4 years teaching experience, post higher level teaching diploma qualification
    Extensive knowledge and experience of management and delivery of teacher training and CPDET programs
    Experience of line managing/ coordinating teaching teams


    Desirable requirements

    Relevant IH Certificate / Diploma, or similar. Relevant masters.

    Role Purpose


    To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English and to support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission.

    Main Accountabilities

    · Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles

    · Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students? performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy

    · Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students? needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team

    · Complete teaching related administrative tasks to specified standards

    · Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council?s position at the forefront of best ELT practices

    · Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students? understanding of contemporary UK

    · Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service

    About You


    This is a great opportunity for a newly-Qualified teacher to join our teaching team. As part of a comprehensive training and development including an intensive programme to help develop your skills in teaching children (6 to 17) and then you will join our on-going Teacher Support Programme.


    What we're looking for is someone with:

    · High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module

    · First degree

    · Cambridge CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL.

    · Desirable Experience in teaching relevant age groups:

    · And one or more of the following

    Young learners aged 6 to 10 (400+ hours)
    Young learners aged 11 to 13 (400+ hours)
    Young learners aged 14 to 17 (400+ hours)
